Great news from NHPRC

The Connecticut Historical Society is pleased to announce that it has received funding from NHPRC for an additional two years to continue to reduce the manuscript backlog. Since September 2008, Project Archivist Jennifer Sharp and I have added more than 1600 records to OCLC and our online catalog, far surpassing the 900 we had anticipated. At this rate, we hope to virtually eliminate the backlog by October 2012!

I know, having a project archivist does mean I am not… Continue

Reminder: Lone Arranger Event / Boston / May 26

"Case Studies from the Field"

Organizations of all sizes rely on their record keepers. Sometimes that job falls to just one person, but being the only member of your

department doesn't mean that you have to go it alone. In collaboration

with New England Archivists, the Congregational Library is hosting a gathering

for lone arrangers to share their…

Welcome New Members!

At some point in the recent past, I- your humble group administrator-

had to switch to approving pending membership requests to try to stave

off the spammers. So far I think it has worked. A result of this is

that I'm very much aware of days like this when we end up getting 6 new

members- and it's just barely 2pm EST.

For the new folks, or those who are interested in an expurgated guided tour of some of the features available here, check out my… Continue

Late again, as usual. I am comfortable with any of these options. If you personally feel more comfortable with Social Go, I say why not? I have a new Web domain (turned out to be cheaper than I thought) for some work I am doing I intend to run a…

I guess the key is to have good finding aids/cataloging, and documentation for what you have done. When I started, the previous archivist had been gone for 7 months and it took be at least 6 months to figure out the system. I'm trying to leave…

I'll pass this suggestion along to the "powers that be." One of the concerns is similar materials being put in different places. So I would still want to pull those things together somehow, no matter what the organization scheme is.

I have struggled with the idea of record groups for a while. I finally decided to do away with then for the following reason: my predicessor created all of these record groups numbers which were impossible to figure out and there was no key to them…

Without knowing your exact situation, I would question trying to impose a new order on "old" stuff. It might be easier to impose the new order from this moment forward. What kind of access do your currently have to your records?
