Has anyone heard of archives/libraries/museums switching to CFL lighting for energy efficiency reasons? From my very extensive research (a quick look at a couple of hits off a Google search) it looks like CFLs give off comparable UV rays as the regular flourescents, but I would assume they would be more difficult to fit with UV filters.
I didn't realize this post was so old! I haven't read anything recently (meaning things may have changed) but in the past CFLs weren't recommended because of the UV light and as far as I know there weren't any covers for them. It could be that there are now but I doubt it given their odd shape. I would avoid them if possible but I know, as many of us do, that our light fixtures are controlled by our institutions and can't always be altered.
